Inteplast Group is boosting its stretch film capacity by adding two extrusion lines at its AmTopp division plant in Remington, Ind.

One line is already running and the second is slated to begin in mid-to-late October, said Scott Stevens, senior director of product and business development for AmTopp stretch films. He hopes to have 60 new employees on board by then, increasing the staff 37 percent, despite the tight labor market.

"This has been a challenge, but we are in a very good area with a lot of enthusiasm," Stevens said in a Sept. 20 email.

Previously, the plant made only pre-stretched film that was shipped to customers. The facility now will have two extrusion lines and four pre-stretch lines.

The additions will bring the plant's stretch and pre-stretch film production capacity to 60 million pounds a year — on par with each of its four sister plants in Phoenix; Charlotte, N.C.; and Houston and Lolita, Texas. The plant can produce AmTopp's complete line of products, including machine and hand films and wraps, and color-tinted and high-performance films.

AmTopp bought the 350,000-square-foot Remington plant in 2019 to improve delivery times to Midwest customers. Its linear low density polyethylene stretch film is used to secure products as they're transported and protect them from dust or corrosive elements.

AmTopp's stretch films unit will be installing a state-of-the-art warehouse inventory control scanning system to track raw materials and finished goods. "This is an improvement project being spread across all AmTopp stretch film plants," Stevens said.

Livingston. N.J.-based Inteplast ranks No. 1 in Plastics News' sales-based survey of North American film and sheet makers. The company has relevant estimated 2021 sales of $3.75 billion and more than 6,000 film and sheet employees at 50 plants.

Stevens projected AmTopp's 2022 stretch film sales will reach $315 million to $320 million.
